SWEPs brazed plate heat exchangers help provide an efficient cooling solution for the largest aquarium in Latin America

The largest aquarium in Latin America is home to some species that are not native to the region. SWEP and Transcalor teamed up to supply the necessary cold water solution to ensure the comfort of these species.

Necessary to supply cold water to ensure the comfort and well-being of the animals

Brazil is known worldwide for its rich fauna and flora, with a huge diversity of species. However, there are some species that are not native to Brazil, and the only way to see them is by going to a zoo or an aquarium.

To ensure the comfort and well-being of these animals in the largest parts of Latin America, it is necessary to supply cold water to their facilities 24/7. SWEP’s highly-efficient brazed plate heat exchangers with a low carbon footprint help to provide this cooling inside Transcalor chillers.

Seal in water

Transcalor develops standard and customized chillers for several applications, including hospitals, plastics, food and beverage, HVAC, etc. Transcalor is one of the biggest chiller producers in Brazil and is known and respected for its expertise in the market. They are also a long-term partner of SWEP.

Providing cold water to a large aquarium

This latest project between Transcalor and SWEP involved providing cold water to a large aquarium in Brazil. The aquarium is home to lots of terrestrial and marine animals that live in hot and cold climates. Among them, there are polar bears, seals, and sea lions whose water needs to be cooled and maintained between 15-20°C (59-68°F). The cold water from the chiller cools the habitat water providing the animals with the perfect environment. The chiller water and habitat water never mix, which avoids corrosion and ensures the precise temperature required for the animals.

A one million liter tank

The polar bears have a 1 million liter tank which is maintained at a constant 15°C (59°F), provided by a chiller of 120,000 kCal/h that has been in operation since 2019. Seals and sea lions together demand around 1 million liters of water supplied at 20°C (68°F), with 3 chillers installed to provide 180,000 kCal. These chillers have been in operation since 2015.

SWEP’s 80/80AS

SWEP’s 80/80AS range offers high performance, low carbon footprint, easy installation/maintenance, and a higher COP for the system which makes them an ideal heat transfer choice for this cool water solution. The B80AS is built on the successful 80 platform and adds the advantages of our patented AsyMatrix® technology to deliver increased thermal performance and reduced pressure drop. The asymmetric channel configuration smartly combines maximum heat transfer on the refrigerant side with minimum pressure drop on the secondary side.

At SWEP, we constantly challenge efficiency: in the products we design, in the way we work, and in all our interactions. We use our expertise and innovativeness to create sustainable heating and cooling solutions that also give our customers a competitive edge. Our brazed plate heat exchangers provide unparalleled performance at the lowest life-cycle cost.
